Val-d’Or, June 14, 2018 – Today was the unveiling of the official poster, the programming, and the route of the 50th edition of the Tour de l’Abitibi, which will take place in Val-d’Or from the 16th to the 22nd of July.
After a two year absence, the members of the organizing committee were delighted to be back in Val-d’Or. This year, cyclists will have the chance to visit the cities of Val-d’Or, Amos, Rouyn-Noranda, Malartic and Lebel-sur-Quévillon.
Once again this year, the individual time trial and challenge sprint Abitibi will be presented to provide a high-level sporting challenge for cyclists. While the individual time trial will highlight the fastest cyclists on a distance of 11.4 kilometres, the challenge sprint Abitibi will be an opportunity for the best sprinters to stand out. “Although the Abitibi sprint challenge is not part of the official Tour events, this race gives the opportunity to the talent to be noticed from the beginning of the week.” said Bruno Gauthier, vice president and technical director.
A valuable partnership that continues
The organization took the opportunity to present the members of the organizing committee, which, through
their involvement, allow the realization of an event of this magnitude. This year again, IAMGOLD is the title
sponsor of the Tour de la relève. This valuable collaboration will once again offer an incomparable experience
to all the young riders and coaches who will participate in the Tour de la Relève IAMGOLD. The support of the
Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec was also emphasized, a partnership that is essential to
the long-term success of the Abitibi Cycling Tour.
50 years of history
The 2018 edition will be remarkable with the Abitibi cycling tour celebrating its 50th anniversary. Several activities are planned for the occasion. Like the Tour des Légendes, runners from the last 49 years are invited to participate.
Also, for the festivities of the 50th we will have a tribute evening where we will enthrone the first five members of the Hall of Fame of the Tour de l’Abitibi. A promising edition
Sanctioned by the International Cycling Union (UCI), the Tour de l’Abitibi is the only one of the 8 competitions
