In just over two weeks, more than 200 professional cyclists from every corner of North America and around the world converge on the Lower Mainland for Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series – BC Superweek – which begins with the $25,000 Tour de Delta presented by Beedie.
“Year after year, the communities of North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen are incredibly welcoming to all the teams and cyclists to open BC Superweek. It’s also wonderful to see the collaboration between the City of Delta, local businesses, and community members continues to grow year after year with the Tour de Delta,” said BC Superweek Series Director Mark Ernsting.
Bordered by the Fraser River to the north, Boundary Bay to the south, and the Strait of Georgia to the west, Delta provides a spectacular backdrop for criteriums on Friday, July 6 in North Delta and Saturday, July 7 in Ladner. The Tour de Delta concludes with the UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday, July 8 in Tsawwassen.
“For almost 20 years, Tour de Delta has attracted cyclists and spectators from Canada and around the world. It is a significant summer attraction for our community and acts as an excellent ambassador for sport,” said Mayor Lois E. Jackson. “Many thanks to the incredible athletes, City of Delta staff and all the wonderful volunteers. We are looking forward to this year’s Tour de Delta being the best yet!”
The UCI-sanctioned White Spot | Delta Road Races offers fans and aspiring cyclists an up close and personal opportunity to see elite professional athletes represent their countries. The men and women wearing the Team Canada jersey on July 8 will look to accumulate points with an eye on international competition like the World Championships and Olympic Games.
“The White Spot | Delta Road Race is an incredible chance to see teams and cyclists who have come from all over Canada, the United States, and around the world to compete. It’s the only UCI-certified road race in British Columbia and we’re thrilled to have it as part of the Tour de Delta and BC Superweek,” added Ernsting.
BC Superweek is Canada’s biggest professional road cycling series and features more than $140,000 in prize money with nine races over ten days. BC Superweek runs from July 6 – 15 and is made up of the Tour de Delta presented by Beedie (July 6 – 8), New West Grand Prix (July 10), Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix (July 11), Giro di Burnaby presented by Appia Development (July 12), PoCo Grand Prix presented by Dominion Lending Centres (July 13), and Tour de White Rock presented by Landmark Premiere Properties (July 14 – 15).
