Once again, with the generous support of Robert J. Macdonald, the Giro at the RBC GranFondo Whistler will boast the largest single day prize purse in North America at $50,000. The Giro will be offering prize money to a winning field of both female and male athletes to a depth of 20. The top women and men to cross the finish line will receive $15,000 for first place, $5,000 for second, $1,200 for third, and cash prizing up to the top 20 men and women.
Last year’s event was won by BC’s very own Alison Jackson and Jack Burke. Alison has just finished competing at the 2017 Giro d’Italia Femminile (general classification 32) and most recently finished 2nd in stage 6 of the Ladies’ Internationale LOTTO Thüringen Tour.
Jack won the 2017 British Columbia Provincial Time Trial championships, most recently finished 9th in the GC at the Joe Martin Stage race, and can attest to the unique experience that competing in the Giro provides: “I absolutely loved riding in last year’s epic event – it was so much fun! The Giro is way beyond just a bike race. There are tens of thousands of supporters cheering you on, making the atmosphere incredible. Plus after you cross the finish line, well, WHAT A PARTY!”
An awards ceremony will be held following the race, in the Celebration Plaza at the finish area in Whistler between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm on race day (subject to change).
The Giro is open to UCI licensed Cat 1, 2, or 3 riders only. View our upgrade policy page here for more information on upgrade requirements, and be sure to submit any upgrade requests at least two weeks in advance of the race.
