BC’s Junior and U17 riders competing at the 2019 Canadian Junior/U17/Para Track Cycling Championships walked up to the podium 25 times over the course of the three-day event at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre in Milton, Ontario this past weekend, April 12-14. Over 100 athletes from across the country participated in the event to vie for the coveted maple leaf national championship jersey.
It didn’t take long for BC’s athletes to find the podium as Victoria’s Junior phenom, Riley Pickrell, claimed BC’s first gold medal of the weekend with a win in the Junior Men’s Keirin race. Victoria’s other Junior phenom in the Women’s category, Sarah Van Dam, collected a silver in the Junior Women’s Keirin and a bronze in the Scratch race on the first day of the championships. Jacob Rubuliak of Kelowna earned a bronze in the Junior Men’s Scratch race while Annabella Stoll-Dansereau of Vancouver won two bronze medals in the Junior Women’s Pursuit and Keirin races.

With their legs warmed up after a day of racing, BC’s riders continued to roll on the second day of the championships finding their way to the podium several more times in events including the Points Race, Elimination Race, and Sprint.

BC’s Day 2 Medal Count: 9
The third and final day of the 2019 Canadian Junior/U17/Para Track Cycling Championships started off with the team events where the Junior Men’s Team Pursuit (Riley Pickrell, Ethan Ogrodniczuk, Sean Richardson, and Jacob Rubuliak) and Junior Women’s Team Pursuit (Sarah Van Dam, Elizabeth Gin, Annabella Stoll-Dansereau, Caitlin Wallin, Casey Garrison) each won a gold medal in their respective races.
In the Team Sprint, BC’s Junior Men (Riley Pickrell, Ethan Ogrodniczuk, and Tyler Davies) earned a silver medal while the Junior Women (Elizabeth Archbold and Annabella Stoll-Dansereau) and U17 Women (Astrid Wuerr and Lilly Ujfalusi) each finished with a bronze. U17 rider, Parker Swanstrom, from Victoria raced on a composite team in the U17 Men’s Team Sprint and finished with a bronze.
The weekend was capped off with the final events of the championships including Junior Men’s Kilo TT, Junior Women 500 TT, Junior Men’s Madison, and Junior Women’s Madison events where BC’s riders would go on to earn five more medals.

After three days of racing, 42 events, and a lot of amazing performances from athletes across the nation, the 2019 U17/Junior/Para Canadian Track Cycling Championships concluded with BC’s riders winning a total of 25 medals.
