Cycling BC announces there will be no provincial cyclocross championships in 2021 | Shifts focus to supporting cross nationals in Langford, BC
Following the cancellation of the 2021 BC Interior Cyclocross (BCICX) series which was scheduled to host the 2021 Provincial Cyclocross Championships School of Hard Knox Cyclocross race in Kelowna on October 24th, Cycling BC has been working behind the scenes to find a suitable replacement event for the BC championships in 2021.
Cycling BC has assessed a range of options in the search for a replacement event to host its Provincial Championships including local cyclocross series races on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland as well as the upcoming Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix UCI C2 race taking place in Langford the day after the Lazer Canadian National Cyclocross Championships. At this stage of the season, with local series already established and in full swing, it has proved to be too late to integrate a provincial championship into one of these events in a manner that would meaningfully recognize the best performances of British Columbian racers. With no other options, Cycling BC will now look to 2022 to host its next cyclocross provincials.
With the 2021 Lazer Canadian National Cyclocross Championships and Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix UCI C2 race at Bear Mountain in Langford, BC from November 26th to 28th, 2021, Cycling BC will shift its efforts to supporting these events so that all cycling enthusiasts can take part. There will be categories for Elite, Masters, U23, Junior, Youth, and non-championship Sportif categories for men & women.
Cycling BC has reduced the cost of a UCI licence for BC residents for the remainder of the season to encourage as many British Columbians as possible to take part in these national-level events. Current BC Provincial Race licence holders may also upgrade their licence to a UCI licence at no extra cost.
Cycling BC’s iRide program will also be hosting a free iRide kids cyclocross expo during the Lazer Canadian National Cyclocross Championships and Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix so that kids ages 3-11 can learn some bike handling skills and try racing on a dedicated kid’s course at Bear Mountain.
