iRide reaches 7,500

With just over 1 week remaining in the 2015-2016 school year, Cycling BC’s iRide program has now coached over 7500 students across the province since February. Thank you to all of our supporters who have believed in this program and helped us build for the future.

iRide Coordinator, Ben Chaddock reports from a busy spring:

I had the great pleasure of coaching many schools this spring, providing the opportunity to meet many students across the province and work with many of our new coaches. I am excited about what I’ve witnessed.  My biggest lesson from this year, and why our program gives me great hope, is how the coaches focus on class atmosphere and fun.

In my travels, I have visited communities with great cycling ability and others with lower general ability, as you may expect.  However, in each community, the level of intimidation and peer pressure is similar.  Those at the top of their relative skill level compared to their peers can intimidate classmates, as is the nature of youth and social development.

My greatest happiness comes in seeing the majority of the class challenge this status quo and find their cycling confidence through the fabulous atmosphere set forth by our coaches. Be it joining those more skilled riders in perfecting the iRide challenges and learning to ride in general, I see this general impact as the greatest gift Cycling BC and the iRide program can give to the future of cycling in British Columbia, the sense that “I can do it”, “I can ride that roller”, “I can ride that hill” and “I am good at this” and “I can ride with the group”.  Thank you to all of our iRide coaches, I tip my hat to your excellence. And thank you to our supporters for believing in this program.
