PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

It is my hope to see continued growth in bike racing in BC. Most importantly, I would love to see a balance– where the sport’s depth increases and the level of competition continues to improve, all while participants come out to events because they are FUN.

This is a delicate balance, and on that is essential to the long term viability of bike racing in our province. While the sports elite level much be developed and supported, so as to offer a pathway to the world stage, I firmly believe that this pathway must offer ascendent racers, and those that they line up beside, and outlet for recreation, fun and offer a sense of community.

Additionally, I would like to offer the insights of an Islander to the board of directors. Too often, Vancouver Island is an insular community in the BC cycling scene. And yet, we boast two of the best cyclocross and cross country series’ in the country, as well as offer fertile ground for countless racers, ranging from first timers to seasoned pros. Islanders host amazing events and travel hundreds of kilometres, by car, ferry and plane to join in BC bike races. Having a body around the board to offer an understanding of this sect of cyclist would be a huge asset.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

My involvement in the BC cycling scene is one of both an event organizer and competitive road, mountain and cyclocross racer.

In addition to racing extensively in BC and the Pacific Northwest, I have been an integral part of the regional grassroots racing scene. Since moving to Victoria in 2010, I have organized countless alleycat races, cyclocross clinics, competitions and events. As well, I have developed a duo of successful weekly road group rides out of my shop, Broad Street Cycles.

Through the store and these grassroots events, I have played a key role in developing a countercultural community where aspiring racers, messengers, olympic medallists and perpetual Cat 4s meet on equal footing. It has been my pleasure to craft a cool community of likeminded individuals looking for the freedom that comes from racing bikes, and being a part of such a vibrant and self-reliant scene.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

In addition to managing staff, sales and brand direction for a dynamic and successful bike shop (Broad Street Cycles), I have organized many events of varying scales.

Ranging from Friday night alleycat races encompassing half a dozen volunteers and as many racers, to the massive undertaking of the 2015 Single Speed Cyclocross World Championships, these events have all indelibly contributed to the cycling culture of our province.

On a recurring basis, I have been an instigator and promotor for Stuckylife events, Cross on the Rocks cyclocross races, and helped extensively with the Vancouver CX Coalition series, Island Cup XC races, etc.

From pounding stakes and stringing course tape, to running a reg table or Instagram account, my event organization and community focus runs the gamut between small scale attention to detail and big picture execution.

Craig Bosenberg

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

I have served the Board of Cycling BC over the last year.

Over the last 3 years, Cycling BC has seen a number of challenges. Significantly, this has included the election of 3 almost entirely different Boards and 3 different EDs.

Working with the current Board to establish some stability within the organizational leadership has been rewarding and I believe that we have made strong progress towards this goal.

I have volunteered to stand for re election from the current Board in an effort to further ensure stability and continuity within the Board leadership for the immediate future.

If elected, I would work with the new Board and the current ED to continue to build and grow the organization, promoting Cycling in all its disciplines.

I would like to see the organization further develop the products and services it offers the membership, thereby increasing the value of membership, whilst  expanding the membership in disciplines which are less well represented despite strong popularity within the community.

In short, I would like to see Cycling BC become the world class organization I know it is capable of being. I believe this can be achieved with methodical and strategic planning, building the capacity of the Organization from within, and creating and building strategic partnerships within the community.

Encouraging active engagement of the membership and dialogue with the various stakeholders is key to this process.

I believe that achieving these goals requires a strong, consistent and representative Board membership with a clear understanding of their role in building the organization.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

I am a keen masters cyclist and active member of the Victoria Cycling community.

My family are also active cyclists and my son participates in youth competitions in all disciplines.

I currently serve on the Board of the Tripleshot Cycling Club and am also a member of the Victoria Wheelers club.

I have been an enthusiastic sportsman throughout my life and have participated in and led various other sporting organizations and clubs in previous years.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

Throughout my career as a physician, I have held various leadership and administrative roles within Medical organizations. I have led 2 medical departments, overseeing anesthesia and medical services for populations of half a million people. I have sat on various Medical advisory committees in 2 health authorities and led Patient Safety initiatives on a Provincial scale.

I enjoy the challenges of organizational management and leadership.

I have also variously held leadership roles in sporting and other organizations.

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

I love Cycling BC. The initiatives including social media, athlete features, programs for kids such as iRide, the race calendar, support for new clubs, just to name a few, are well done and effective. It would be an exciting opportunity to help the association achieve its strategic initiatives and to work alongside the cycling advocates on the board of directors.

Cycling brings a great deal of joy to my life and the friends that I have made through the sport have become family. Through my participation on the board of directors, I would hope to inspire more people to adopt cycling.

My personal vision for Cycling BC is to help increase participation of cycling by women and families, and to help make the sport as safe as possible for  participants at all levels.

Thank you for reviewing this letter of interest and considering me a passionate and effective addition to your team.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

I am a passionate cyclist and ride road and MTB. I am a volunteer ride leader for WOWride Cycling Club (3rd year) and have completed NCCP coaching certification level 1.

I hold a UCI license and compete in category 3 races. I ride on the WOWride Tag Racing team and participate in organized events such as gran fondos. I am like so many female cyclists out there…balancing work, life and family and trying to get out on my bike with friends as often as I can. My life has been seriously enriched by cycling and the cycling community, and I can’t wait until my two little girls can ride too.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

I am the CEO and founder of 2 companies and hold a MBA from Queens University. The first company is an aesthetics medical practice (8west.ca) that I co-founded 10 years ago with my husband. We have grown from a team of 2 to a team of 17 and I recently lead the team through an expansion. I am responsible for the vision and strategic initiatives of the company, directing all business units. The second company is a new ecommerce store (joyviva.ca). I am particularly proud of the content that we are creating including inspirational fitness related articles and videos. Prior to going into business for myself, I lived in Japan for 5 years and worked in Tokyo as a brand strategist and marketing communications manager at an advertising agency. I am an internet marketing and sales funnel/design/automation specialist.

Connor Curson

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

Cycling BC has a recent, well-developed Vision Statement and Business Plan that I believe serves as a solid platform to guide the organization, and, from the outside, appears to be delivering results. So instead of a personal or divergent vision, I believe in working with the organization’s leadership team, staff, clubs, volunteers, athletes, coaches, sponsors and other stakeholders to develop objective, measurable, and achievable new goals in line with the current vision.

In place of a personal vision, I believe I bring a unique set of skills that would assist the organization in achieving their established vision. As someone trained in policy development and governance, I would bring an objective and analytical ability to identify and understand the organization’s current challenges and risks, develop policy options to address these challenges and risks, and assist the board in selecting and implementing winning solutions.

From my training and experience in group dialogue and facilitation, I also bring a level-headed, cooperative approach with an emphasis on achieving consensus and understanding across diverse groups.

In general, I would like to leverage my skills and experience to help grow cycling participation in BC across all disciplines, encourage healthy lifestyles, and develop lifelong athletes that can succeed both in and out of competition.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

I am passionate about all cycling disciplines. I compete recreationally in the Master’s category in Mountain Bike XCO/XCM and Cyclocross disciplines, I ride my road bike for training and commuting, and I frequently go on multi-day touring trips. You’ll find me out on my bikes year-round, either riding with friends, or driving for personal bests in competition.

I’m a former provincial and national team athlete and coach in the Olympic sport of Whitewater Slalom Kayaking. I was actively involved at the club level as a volunteer coach and event organizer, and later served on the executive boards of Alberta Slalom Canoe-Kayak, the Provincial sport organization for slalom kayaking, and Canoe-Kayak Canada, the National sport association. In these roles, I worked with the board to develop and approve organizational policies, budgets, and staff employment contracts.

Now living and working in BC, my sporting passion is exploring all the amazing cycling opportunities BC has to offer.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

I previously served multiple terms on the executive boards of Alberta Slalom Canoe-Kayak and Canoe-Kayak Canada. I served as both an Athlete’s Representative and Secretary.

In these roles, I worked with the board to develop and approve organizational policies, ranging from vision statements and organizational goals and objectives, to specific policies such as team selection policies, athlete funding policies, club funding policies, and an athlete Code of Conduct. I was actively involved in crafting a new Long-Term Athlete Development Program and NCCP certification program for whitewater kayaking.

I also worked with the boards to develop and approve business plans, budgets, and staff employment contracts. I participated in the hiring of administrative and coaching staff. At the time, these boards managed budgets of $200,000- $500,000, and 2-3 full-time staff, and many part-time staff and short-term contracts.

I hold a master’s degree in Public Policy and apply this education in my role at a BC Crown Corporation. I have completed training in project management and group dialogue/facilitation. I am currently undertaking self-directed studies in finance.

Maureen Elworthy

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

Being new to Vancouver and Cycling BC, I don’t have a strong vision to share, yet. My hope is that this diverse and strong membership has an energetic, dedicated, and effective Board to serve them in their activities and ambitions.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

I am an avid bike commuter and traveller – long distance solo tours are my favourite way to travel. My longest tours include riding the Camino de Santiago route in Spain, and riding the West Coast from Victoria to Mexico. My family commuted via bicycle when I was younger, and I have been a member of the Greater Victoria Cycling Coalition for several years. I ride weekly in a cycling group here in Vancouver, and look forward to participating in several fondos this summer.

I have extensive experience working with volunteer community organizations. In my hometown of Victoria I worked and volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters, the NCIL 24Hr Crisis Line, Island Sexual Health Clinic, NEED2 Suicide Prevention, Lost the Training Wheels (camp through Queen Alexandra Hospital), Esquimalt Neighbourhood House and Phoenix Human Services.

I am passionate about supporting community initiatives, and am looking for an organization in my new home of Vancouver to apply my skills and energy.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

I managed an online crisis response service for over three years. Within this role I managed 75 volunteers and 12 staff people. I coordinated and delivered all training for volunteers and staff, and planned several events for the organization. I was also responsible for all program reporting, and promotion.

I was an active director on the Board of Directors for Phoenix Human Services for two years, serving as the lead of the Planning Committee, an active voice on the Policy Committee, and the Vice Chair of the Board. I was voted into the Chair role shortly before departing Victoria.

Evan Flater

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

Evan wants to help Cycling BC grow and scale effectively while still making cycling accessible. He sees some of that growth through exploring innovative partnerships.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

Evan Flater was fortunate to compete in his junior years on Team BC in road and track (2007-2008) and on the Junior National team in road (2008). He also dabbled and raced cross-country and cyclo-cross. Following graduation from university in 2013 he rode solo across Canada on a self-supported tour of suffering and joy.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

Evan has a background in accounting and finance and has spent the last four years advising business clients as a management consultant. As a consultant he’s helped clients with their corporate strategy, processes, program governance, and operating models. Catherine Hamilton

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

My vision for Cycling BC is that of a strong, financially sustainable and progressive organization that reflects the interests of its members and champions and nurtures cycling for the future. Cycling BC is already a leader in Canada; the range of activities, programs and support available from the organization is outstanding.

In support of Cycling BC’s vision and mission, I would be interested in assisting with the plan to grow membership and continuing to enhance communication with members. As noted in the 2015 Business Plan, membership is stable, averaging 5,000 members for the past few years. Over the Board term, let’s find a way to activate an upward growth trend line. Perhaps there’s an opportunity to analyze and group the membership into segments, to better understand needs, tailor two-way communication, activate lapsed members and identify key growth areas, just as youth has been. With the experience and guidance the existing Board members, we can gain insights into how best to help achieve the goals of Cycling BC.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE

I have been an amateur road rider, mountainbiker, triathlete and one-time cross racer (beginner category, with 8-year-olds) for the past 20 years. More guts than glory, but my jam is the energy of events, the sense of community and how race day brings out our best selves.

My philosophy has always been to offset racing time with volunteering – whether on a committee or on a street corner with a traffic flag – a give-and-take with the aim of respecting the time and effort that organizations and individuals invest in making sporting experiences come to life.

For the past 3 years I was the Marketing Chair on a very active community association board; I continue to volunteer at 6 community association fundraising and events throughout the year.  I have been on an organizing committee launching a new event, had ongoing roles at existing events (Ironman 70.3 and other local races) and volunteered at the VIP area for the Tour de Victoria. My business travel schedule over recent years made committee roles challenging so out of necessity I’ve chosen volunteer roles that are flexible. My work has now changed and I am keen to get more involved at a higher level.

ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE

For the past 8 years I was a member of a senior executive team overseeing the growth and profitability of an $80 million national hearing company. I have been responsible for development of strategic business plans, lead generation strategies and brand growth. Developing thriving and passionate teams, internal culture building, change management and stakeholder consensus are core competencies. I have led a team of 12 FTEs. Currently I am enrolled in a board member certification program through the ExecRanks platform.

Erich Harvey

PERSONAL VISION FOR CYCLING BC

“An inclusive organization servicing youth, athletes, coaches, officials, disciplines and provides opportunities for individuals to enter and enjoy the lifelong sport of cycling”.

When I started racing in 2005 I never thought I would find myself as a race organizer, coach, and now organizing my own youth club. One of my values is not only to appreciate those who make the sport possible but to give back by volunteering my time to help ensure others enjoy the sport. I believe that sport would not be possible without the volunteers but also with strong leadership at the board level.

With the growth of iride, fondos, coaching, new officials and a large number of participants at our local races, Cycling BC has a tremendous opportunity to be a positive example for Cycling in Canada. It will take not only our high performing programs but a high performing administration to ensure 5-year targets are set and delivered on. Over the past few weeks speaking with members, I’ve heard concerns about gaps in program linkages and agree that there is more we can do to bridge participants into clubs, improve our coach training but also to ensure there is a clear pathway for every pillar in our sport. I have also heard an interest in creating a more transparency with decisions, I believe there are very simple policies, procedures, and communication we can introduce to build trust with our members.

One of the exciting things happening at Cycling BC is the creative teamwork I’ve seen in cyclocross and Mountain Biking. Creative thinking, flexibility and a genuine culture of inclusiveness has built a number of very successful races with multiple clubs contributing to the success. I believe there are a number of positive attributes in this way of thinking which we could bring to the board table at Cycling BC.

As you can see I’ve had a long history working with youth, cycling, and not-for-profit governance. These areas I’m passionate and what lead me to become be active in many aspects of our sport. After many years working in the recreation and non-profit sector, with a specific focus on working with youth-serving organizations, I am excited to provide leadership as a board member.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like further detail.

I believe I have a fresh perspective that will help support and guide the cycling community.

CYCLING AND VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE
