Basic Cycling Skills

This outdoor skills module helps you practice teaching basic cycling skills to participants in the “Active Start,” “FUNdamentals,” “Learn to Train,” and “Train to Train” stages of the Long Term Development.

The module builds on the concepts covered in the theory modules and takes place at a local grass or gravel field. To pass the module, participants must prepare a lesson plan and teach two 10-minute skill sessions to other coaches in training. Please complete question 43 in the Community Coach Journal or question 52 Club Coach Journal to prepare.

Module includes:

  1. Braking
  2. Straight-line riding
  3. Tight turns
  4. Gearing and cadence
  5. Cornering
  6. Wheel Lifts
  7. Climbing
  8. Descending
  9. Dismounts/Remounts
  10. Shoulder Bumping
  11. Tire Buzzing
  12. Drop-offs

Pre-Requisites:

  • Register as a Cycling BC HopOn Instructor, a Club-Assistant, or Club-Certified Coach (cyclingbc.net/edu)
  • One theory module, either:
    • Cycling Practice Planning (4hr)
    • Skills & Tactics Theory (10hr)
