Ready to Race! Competition-Introduction

Ready to Race! Introduction-to-Competition (R2R), subsequently referred to as Competition-Introduction, is the context for coaches working with club riders new to competition. These athletes are likely in the LTAD stages: Learn to Train, or Train to Train stage, and include youth club riders aged 9-16 or adult cyclists participating in mass-start events. These athletes have basic but developed cycling skills and the desire to begin competing within a structured training and competition program. They should have passed through an entry-level Community Initiation program (CCI) to help them develop the basic skills.

The Competition-Introduction stream is structured as follows:

Training Basics:  This 14-hour in-class course designed for coaches working with club riders aged 9-16 or adult riders pursuing a structured annual training plan for a competitive or mass-start event (Long Term Athlete Development phase: Learn to Train and Train to Train). Course materials include ethics, participant needs, practice planning, insurance, and risk management, leading a practice, sustenance, mental preparation, managing a team.  This course is the minimum requirement for new coaches who would like to work with their local cycling club or with Cycling BC’s iRide program. In that respect, this course can replace the need to complete the 1-day Let’s Ride! Community Initiation course.

Basic Cycling Skills: This 8-hour workshop provides coaches with the understanding and expertise required to instruct the 8 basic and 8 intermediate skills of cycling. Workshop material covers skill analysis, observation, and corrective feedback – all vital skills for coaches of both new and experienced cyclists looking to improve.  This course is part of both the Community Initiation stream and the Competition-Introduction stream and has no pre-requisites.

Training to Race: During this 14-hour in-class workshop, you will gain valuable tools to support your athletes as they prepare for cycling competitions including training techniques, season planning, mental preparation and more. Training Basics is a strongly recommended pre-requisite.

Skills & Tactics:  This 8-hour hands-on workshop is focused on analyzing athletes’ performances and teaching racing skills and tactics. It is an advanced class where you will learn discipline-specific skills (road, mountain bike, track, or BMX) needed for racing.  Coaches must complete the Skills & Tactics in two separate disciplines in order to be considered trained.

Certification:  To achieve certified status, coaches submit an athlete portfolio, complete the Making Ethical Decision E-module and pass an online exam specific to the skills & tactics courses chosen during training. The MED module can be completed through (1) $85 e-learning module + free exam, or (2) $40 four-hour classroom course + $15 exam (find a classroom course here). To begin the certification process, please contact Cycling Canada’s Master Coach Developer here.

Maintenance of Certification:  Certified coaches must complete Professional Development in order to maintain their certification. The requirement for Performance Cycling is 20 points every five years. For more details about maintenance of certification and upcoming opportunities, click here.

For those wishing to pursue additional training, please review our Coach & Builder Web and schedule a call with a Master Coach Developer.
