Whistler Blackcomb hosted an epic weekend of racing last weekend, with the BC XCO Championships, Canada Cup XCO Final, and opening round of the Downhill BC Cup.
On Saturday, riders raced at the joint BC XCO Championships and Canada Cup XCO Final. With riders racing for provincial championship titles, national series and UCI points, an impressive field turned out in both Elite women’s and men’s fields, including Olympic bronze medalist Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops, BC) and three-time Olympian Geoff Kabush (Squamish, BC), who won the Elite men’s race and provincial championship title.
Evan Guthrie (Peachland, BC) took third in the Elite Men’s race, securing himself the win in the Canada Cup XCO series overall ranking. With his win in the Junior Men’s field, Holden Jones (Squamish, BC) took silver in the Canada Cup series, while Jayne Rossworn also secured silver in the series, along with the Elite Women’s provincial championship title.
The first round of the Downhill BC Cup followed on Sunday, with riders racing in the dusty heat in the Whistler bike park. Reigning 2016 series winners Claire Buchar and Chris Kovarik won the Elite Women’s and Men’s races, with Kovarik posting the fasted time of the day. The Downhill BC Cup continues in Sun Peaks on July 9th, where riders will race not only for series points, but for the provincial championship as well.
