BC Premier Cyclocross Series: Vanier Park

Summer-like conditions welcomed the over 320 cyclocross fanatics who converged on Vanier Park, Vancouver, for West Coast Racing’s annual cyclocross race on October 4th.   With the race being the second stop in the Cycling BC Premier Cross series, there was even more on the line than beer, waffles and bragging rights.

Elite women series leader Jean Ann Berkenpass, Giant Vancouver, was in tough against Liv Giant Canada’s Sandra Walter, who is carrying amazing form from competing at the UCI World Mountain Bike Championships back in September. And as scripted, Walter took the hole shot and held on to an impressive victory to take the series lead. Glotman Simpson’s Morgan Cabot battled hard to take second while Berkenpass rounded out the top three.

In the Elite Men’s category, Craig Richey, Red Truck – Garneau p/b Easton found himself in a battle with Kevin Calhoun, Rocky Mountain Factory Team. It took Richey till the last lap to shake Calhoun and seal victory and add to his series lead. Calhoun finished second while Bob Welbourn, Glotman Simpson, took third.

Vanier Park was also the debut for the Master 40+ Women’s race. Anne-Marie Gagnon, Liv Giant Canada, took the win in this competitive race. All of Cycling BC’s Premier Series races will be offering this category.
