Twenty is the magic number as online registration rewards every twentieth Condo Group Bastion Square Grand Prix entrant with $20 off the criterium registration fee (reimbursed at grand prix).
The 2012 Robert W. Cameron Law Cycling Series, June 1-3, in Victoria is part of the Victoria International Cycling Festival and features the Russ Hay’s Time Trial on Dallas Road, the Metchosin BC Provincial Road Cycling Championships, the 20th Annual Condo Group Bastion Square Grand Prix and Tim Horton’s Timbit Challenge.
The 2012 cycling series, which also features an $10,000 minimum overall prize purse for Elite men and women and a bonus prize from La-z-boy Furniture Galleries, is an “Omnium” format with points awarded to the top finishers of each stage and overall prizes going to those who have accumulated the most points.
“An impressive prize money purse will continue to attract bigger names from across Canada and also bring Elite racers from the United States,” says series director Jon Watkin. “We expect a truly international calibre of athletes this year.”
The Robert W. Cameron Law Cycling Series’ road event also crowns BC’s road racing men and women’s champion.
“The series is a great mix of the past, present and future,” says Watkin. “We start the weekend with the latest cycling technology at Friday’s time trial, crown BC’s current stars at Saturday’s provincial road championship, and on Sunday we honour 20 years of Victoria’s rich cycling history at Bastion Square and cheer on our next generation of stars with the Timbit challenge.

“Victoria has produced many world-class cyclists like Roland Green and Alison Sydor – and now we have Nic Hamilton, Rob Britton, Annie Ewart, Gillian Carlton, and our biggest star, Ryder Hesjedal. With Ryder going for the overall GC at the Giro D’Italia in May, we hope to have more to celebrate in June. This is our way of passing the torch – inspiring children and youth to take up cycling, whether it is for the love of being active or to aspire to Olympian heights and world championship dreams.
The weekend events feature:
- Russ Hay’s Dallas Road Time Trial, Friday, June 1st, 2012. An out-and-back five kilometre fast and flat race against the clock on Victoria’s picturesque Dallas Road Waterfront. The racing starts at 6:00 pm.
- Metchosin BC Road Cycling Championships, Saturday, June 2, 2012. This race was site of the 2000 Provincial Championships (won by Roland Green) and is back after a 12 year hiatus. This challenging course features rolling terrain, some steep climbs, and a technical descent. At the end of the day, only one will be crowned BC Road Cycling Champion. Racing starts at 7 a.m.
- 20th Annual Condo Group Bastion Square Grand Prix, Sunday, June 3, 2012. The perimeter of Victoria’s sleepy historic Old Towne comes alive with criterium action, starting at 8:30 am and continuing with the women’s elite race at Noon and the men’s elite race at 1:00 pm. Category racing also includes a high school race.
- Tim Horton’s Timbit Challenge, Sunday, June 3, 2012 (10:45 am). A crowd and kids’ favourite, children aged 5 to 10 ride a lap of Bastion Square alongside some of Canada’s Olympians and Victoria’s cycling greats. Participation in the Challenge is limited to the first 150 entries – all participants receive a t-shirt, medal, water bottle and other goodies. The best part: it’s all free!
