After 12 events spanning March 24th to June 15th, the BC Cup Road Series presented by Cobotix is entering its final phase. Racers vying for overall titles in the series will be looking forward to capturing points in the last block of the season which includes four BC Superweek races and the penultimate road event of the season, the Hougan Park Road Race presented by United Velo on August 3rd. The series will then conclude at the top of Mount Seymour on August 18th following the gruelling Seymour Challenge presented by Brandon.
A few key battles have animated the season with consistency being the key to success for those in the top spots. In the Men’s Elite Cat 1,2 field, Patrick Riddell (Langlois Brown Racing) leads the series ahead of his teammate Nigel Kinney. Both racers have captured points in 10 of their eligible races. The Langlois Brown Racing duo are followed closely by Kyle Buckosky (Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes) and Nick Monette (Mighty Cycling) who are both within striking distance of the overall title. BC Superweek will prove to be an important battleground for these racers as they go head to head with professional criterium racers from around the world.
Claire Cameron (Fluevog’s Crit Nasty) holds a commanding lead in the Women’s Cat 1,2 field. Claire has managed to stand on the podium in every race she has entered in BC this season resulting in a wide margin over Isabella Bertold and Michele Schaeffer of the Instafund La Prima Racing team who sit in 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The most entertaining battle of the 2019 BC Cup has arguably been in the Masters Men category with Jeffrey Werner (Langlois Brown Racing) and Matt Usborne (recently joining Penderfund p/b Neighbourhood Holdings) trading the top spot on multiple occasions. Jeffrey currently holds a narrow 10-point lead heading into BC Superweek. Uli Mayer (Glotman Simpson Cycling) sits in 3rd after an outstanding performance at the Vancouver is Awesome Grand Prix.
The Junior Men and Junior Women BC Cup race series structure has been amended in order to open up the competition to a great number of developing participants. The following series rule has been amended for Junior Men and Junior women:
- Racers must compete in at least one race per “block” to be eligible for the BC Cup title.
Results from the Hayman Classic Stage Race will be included for all junior racers regardless of participation in the Spring Block. All racers who scored points in the Hayman Classic Stage Race and/or the Spring Block will be eligible for the series overall. Evan McBeath and Annabella Stool-Dansereau both racing for Cannondale currently lead their respective junior categories.
Finally, some clarification on how points will be awarded during the upcoming BC Superweek events. Standings for Elite Men Cat 3, Master Men, and Junior Men will be taken from the Masters / Category 3/4 race. Points will be awarded separately for each group. Standings for Junior Women will be taken from the Women Cat 1/2/3 race.
