Community BMX track at LEC

Cycling BC and the Langley Mountain Biking Association (LMBA) have teamed up to build a community BMX track at the bike park at the Langley event center.  The addition of the BMX track adds to the other great features of the bike park.  The bike park already has a skills section, pump track and dirt jumps.

“A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of helping the LMBA build a community BMX, it was a great experience to help a community build a new track and help grow cycling.  I look forward to helping the local athletes develop their skills on the track” – Adam Muys

The Langley Mountain Biking Association was formed in 2003 to promote the development of a mountain bike park as part of the recreational services within the Township of Langley.  Members of the organization had been having informal meetings with the Township since 1997.  However, after a presentation by the organization to the Planning Commission of Langley, approval was given to begin searching for a site and planning for the development of such a park.  Towards the end of 2004, Langley Township approved the development of a Mountain Bike Park on a one acre site at Willoughby Mountain Community Park in Langley, provided that the park was wholly funded and built by the L.M.B.A.  A large number of community groups and businesses provided support, students and parents from the two local high schools provided hours of labour, and in 2007 the Willoughby Bike Park was opened to the public.  In 2011 L.M.B.A. worked with the Township to open a second park in Aldergrove.  Just this year, the Township has agreed to begin providing some funding and support for the maintenance of the park.

At the Annual General Meeting of 2012, the members decided that it was time to begin putting more efforts into promoting recreational cycling, and using the parks for that purpose, rather than just focusing on maintenance of the parks.  While priority still needs to be the completion of the BMX track and the repair and maintenance of some portions of the current park, the L.M.B.A. is now looking to expand it’s original mandate to include promotion, encouragement, and training to increase recreational cycling by the local population and youth.
