Cycling BC Announces 2020 Provincial Championships Calendar

Burnaby, BC, December 11, 2019 – Cycling BC is pleased to announce the 2020 calendar for the BC Provincial Championships p/b Lexus for Road, Track, Mountain Bike Cross-country XCO and downhill. The provincial championships represent high quality, competitive racing where BC’s top riders will compete for the coveted BC Provincial Champions jersey.

“We just had our Season Wrap-up Party and Awards at the BC Sports Hall of Fame at the end of November and there was lots of talk about the coming season. The excitement for 2020 is already revving up,” said Erin Waugh, Executive Director of Cycling BC. “I want to thank the community of organizers who have helped us lock down the Provincial Championship dates for 2020 and our Provincial Championships sponsor, Lexus Canada, for their ongoing support.”

The 2020 Provincial Championships race calendar kicks off in South Surrey on May 17th as the SORCE Bike Club hosts the Mountain Bike Cross-County Provincial Championships for the second consecutive year. The twisty Metro Vancouver course caters to all age categories and skill levels equally well and the festival-like atmosphere in the race village means that newly crowned champions can toast to their victory without delay. In keeping with the off-road theme, Mountain Bike Downhill Championships will return to the Whistler Bike Park for 2020.

The province’s best criterium racers have been blessed with racing in front of a dazzling cityscape backdrop for the past 2 years. 2020 will be no different as Elite, Masters, and Jr. Criterium Championships move from Vancouver to the front doorstep of our Provincial Legislature. The Victoria International Cycling Festival Society will host the championship event as part of a multi-race weekend in the Capital Regional District on June 7th.

Elite and Masters Road racers will get their shot at provincial championship glory the following weekend as Escape Velocity hosts the BC Time Trial & Road Race Championships in the Fraser Valley. Time trial specialists should brace themselves against the fierce winds of the Sumas Prairie on June 13th, while rouleurs and climbers alike will be delighted with a return to the Hatzic Valley road race course on June 14th. With new courses and a reconfigured schedule planned, youth (race age 16 and under) and junior racers (race age 17 & 18) will be integrated into the weekend’s events. Juniors will compete for the provincial TT title alongside Elite and Master racers in the morning of Saturday, June 13th. The junior road race championships will take place at the same venue later that afternoon. Youth ability-based racing is also planned for those not ready for the championship events.

“Creating more opportunities for juniors to compete was a major goal for Cycling BC in 2020,” said Cory Ostertag, Member and Event Services Manager at Cycling BC. “We have come up with a schedule that provides ample exposure to high calibre racing in advance of national championships. Juniors will be able to compete in stage races throughout the Pacific Northwest then cap it off with provincial champs.”

Finally, the BC Track Cycling Championships will take place at the Burnaby Velodrome on August 21st through 23rd. The dates for BMX and Cyclocross Provincial Championships will be announced shortly.

“We are privileged to have a dedicated community of organizers that make bike racing first-rate in BC,” admits Ostertag. “Cycling BC supported over 400 events in the province last year and we will continue to build on this thanks, in large part, to the commitment of everyone who comes out to the races and the people who organize, officiate, and volunteer to make these events happen.”

Athletes participating in the provincial championships must have a valid Cycling BC Provincial Race licence or UCI licence and must be a resident of BC in order to qualify for a provincial championship. Provincial champions will receive their champion’s jersey at the conclusion of their championship event and will also receive a provincial championship trophy at the annual Cycling BC Season Wrap-up Party in November.
