High Performance Training Group Develops Athletes On and Off the Bike

The inaugural Cycling BC – Cycling Canada High Performance Training Group wrapped up this week. The program was led and coached by Laura Brown along with Tim Sherstobitoff and provided targeted U23/Senior athletes with enhanced training opportunities to help them progress toward Team Canada aspirations.

While following current health guidelines and restrictions, the high performance group was able to train on the velodrome, cross-country ski, and take part in online education seminars with athletes and staff from all across the country. We are hopeful we will be able to offer group rides and strength conditioning support in the next offering of the program.

There were 10 athletes participating regularly in the programming and here is what they had to say about it:

“I had so much fun doing the training group! I really liked doing my workouts with awesome coaches, meeting new people in a COVID-friendly way, and mixing up my training with the track and cross-country skiing.”

“The new training group gave me an opportunity to meet new people and gain new knowledge through the Zoom seminars. It also gave me the motivation to finally get up skiing this winter.”

“I really enjoyed being able to train with others and it was a great atmosphere!”

“The Cycling BC – Cycling Canada High Performance training group provided an opportunity for a group of highly driven athletes to have access to amazing educational recourses, training facilities and mentors. For me this opportunity was very inspirational, it provided me with a lot more knowledge about the sport, both training and racing and instilled a lot of motivation for the upcoming season.”

“It was great to have a chance to do some training as a group. Being able to encourage each other and work hard together was refreshing.”

Thank you to the Burnaby Velodrome Club, Cycling Canada, Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, coaches Laura Brown and Tim Sherstobitoff, and all the athletes for making it happen.

While the winter program has come to a close, applications for the fall will open later this summer.
