Cycling BC is pleased to announce that the Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix at Bear Mountain on January 9, 2022, will serve as the 2021 BC Cyclocross Championships following the national championships race at the same locale the day prior.

The postponement of the Canadian Cyclocross Championships and the Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix from its original weekend of November 27-28, 2021, to the new date of January 8-9, 2022, provided race organizers, Wheelhouse Cycling Society, the opportunity and time to transition the Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix from a UCI to a provincial championship event. Due to the new date, the Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix will no longer be a UCI sanctioned race. As a provincial championship race, it will allow for non-BC rider participation and will also qualify for national ranking points for Masters racers.

“The sport of cycling in BC has had to contend with so many challenges over the last two years and we feel that hosting the BC Cyclocross Championships is important to not only keep the sport thriving in BC but to also show collective support for the Canadian Red Cross as they work hard to support those who have faced immense hardship from recent floods,” said race organizer, Jon Watkin.

The 2021 BC cyclocross provincials were to be originally held at the BC Interior Cyclocross School of Hard Knox race in Kelowna in the fall but after BC provincial health orders put stricter restrictions on gatherings and events in the Interior Health region, organizers were forced to cancel the event. This left the BC Provincial Cyclocross Championships scrambling to find a new host and venue. With time running out and very few replacement options available, Cycling BC announced in mid-October that the provincial championships were not going to be held in 2021. As it turns out, that is still the case, the 2021 BC Provincial Cyclocross Championships will not technically be held in 2021 but it will be held in 2022 – January 9, 2022.

“We’re excited and grateful that the cyclocross community will have an opportunity to race for a provincial championship at the Trek Bear Crossing Grand Prix,” said Cory Ostertag, Operations Manager at Cycling BC. “It has been over two years since we’ve had a cyclocross provincials race in BC so we’re really looking forward to crowning some provincial champions at this race.”
